Meet Dr. Joan Curtis
Dr. Joan Curtis has a passion for helping people communicate. With over eighteen years experience as a speaker and trainer, her participants constantly marvel at her energy and enthusiasm.
“When you love what you do, it shows,” says Dr. Curtis. “My goal is to help people see that they can be more than they believed possible. Continued refinement of our communication skills is one vital way to expand our abilities.”
That’s not just advice for clients – Joan has lived the life-long learning model herself. Following her passion for written expression, she pursued a Master’s in Journalism and soon discovered that creating and delivering content as a trainer in the public sector provided more fulfillment than writing about what others were doing. That is, until she hit the glass ceiling.
“Working in the public sector, although rewarding, made me realize how easy it is for us to stop taking chances and to stop stretching ourselves, especially when there are real or perceived limits placed on us. In large organizations, it’s critical that we not only retain our ability to identify our creative ideas and desires but also to clearly communicate them so that we can experience greater fulfillment. In so doing we add value to ourselves and to the organization.”
Seeing a need, Joan took the leap and pursued her Doctorate in Adult Education, with an eye on pioneering a practical approach to communication for both the public and private sectors. As a result, her Say It – Just Right approach helps people evaluate their particular challenges and then guides them until they achieve success.
Joan is known for her energetic seminars and teleclasses in strategic interviewing, developing powerful presentations, high performance coaching, skills for speaking with confidence, image making, conflict resolution, developing high performance teams, and facilitation skills.
Her clients include major corporations as well as colleges and universities throughout North America. Joan received her Doctorate in Adult Education from the University of Georgia, as well as a Master’s in Journalism and a Bachelor’s in Sociology.
Author of two landmark texts, Managing Sticky Situations at Work and Strategic Interviewing, Joan has also written three novels, including two mysteries, and six prize winning stories of both fiction and non-fiction. She is a certified coach through the International Coaching Federation and Mentor Coach, LLC. She’s also a member of the Association of Training and Development where she’s published in the professional journal T+D. She is a well known figure in the field of communication strategies and a highly respected speaker and trainer.
